Checking packaged food before you buy

A short checklist to run through at the shelf, before you pay.

Before you buy

Check the use-by/expiry date and, where shown, the best-before date. Indian rules require these to be grouped together on the label.

Look for a batch/lot/code number. Regulations require every package to carry one so the product can be traced.

Inspect the packaging for damage, bulging, leaks, rust, or a broken seal; these can indicate spoilage or tampering.

Check the FSSAI logo and 14-digit licence/registration number are present and legible on the label.

Be wary of unusually low prices, missing ingredient lists, or labels that look poorly printed or inconsistent with the official packaging you have seen before, as these can be signs of counterfeit or substandard product.

If something looks wrong

Do not open or consume the product if the packaging looks tampered with or the dates have passed.

Keep the product, its packaging and your purchase receipt as evidence, and consider filing a report here and/or with the official FSSAI complaint channel.
