Consumer protection tips

Practical steps consumers can take, grounded in the rights set out in the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

Know your rights

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 guarantees consumers six rights: the right to safety, to be informed, to choose, to be heard, to seek redress, and to consumer awareness, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

'Goods' under the Act specifically includes 'food' as defined in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Practical tips

Always keep your bill/invoice; it is often required to pursue a complaint and should carry the seller's FSSAI number.

Report misleading advertisements or claims; these can fall under the Central Consumer Protection Authority's (CCPA) mandate.

You can register a grievance with the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) by web portal, app, or the helpline numbers it publishes.

Filing a report on FoodQuality.in is independent of these official channels and does not itself file a government complaint; use both where appropriate.
