Safe drinking water

Unsafe water is a direct route for foodborne and waterborne illness, especially diarrhoeal disease.

Why it matters

WHO notes that diarrhoea is widespread where water, sanitation and hygiene are inadequate, and is a leading cause of malnutrition in children. Safe water is also one of WHO's five keys to safer food: 'use safe water and raw materials'.

What consumers can do

Use water from a safe, treated source for drinking and for washing food and utensils.

If you rely on packaged or tanker water, check the source and any available quality certification.

If you suspect contaminated drinking water (unusual smell, colour, taste, or illness linked to a water source), you can report it on FoodQuality.in and separately raise it with your local municipal or public health authority.
