How to verify an FSSAI licence or registration number

Every legitimate food business in India must display a 14-digit FSSAI number. Here is what it means and how to check it.

What the number means

FSSAI licence and registration numbers are both 14 digits. A licence number starts with '1'; a registration number (for small/petty food businesses) starts with '2', according to FSSAI's own FAQs on licensing and registration.

The FSSAI logo and licence/registration number must be displayed on the food label in a colour that contrasts with the background, and it is also mandatory on cash receipts, invoices and bills issued by food businesses.

How to check it

FSSAI's Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) at foscos.fssai.gov.in is the official portal for licensing, registration and related verification services for food businesses. If a licence or registration number looks missing, incomplete, or suspicious, note it down exactly as printed and treat that as evidence when filing a report.
